We began class by completing a warm-up on classifying sentences, specifically focusing on the question process to identify parts of speech in a sentence. Then, we reviewed various film interpretations of the Plaza Hotel scene to better understand the atmosphere and details of the characters as they are revealed in chapter 7. With our remaining time we discussed chapters 6 and 7, focusing primarily on the themes, plot development, and literary devices (foreshadowing, symbolism, characterization, narration, etc.) . At Home: Read/annotate chapter 8. Pay particular attention to irony as it supports thematic concepts of the text!
At Home:
Please read the second half of chapter 7 and begin reviewing your vocabulary for our final quiz on Wednesday.
In Class:
Students began by completing a quiz on Gatsby List 2 vocabulary. We then discussed the questioning process (DOK Levels) in annotation as we moved into a small group activity on questioning in Chapter 4. Students formed groups of 3-4 to create multiple choice/short answer questions based on a set of literary categories. See the link below for the instruction sheet. We will complete this activity next class period and present the questions in a gallery walk to determine the strongest questions for each category. At Home: Read/annotate chapter 5 and complete the Gatsby List 3 vocabulary page. In Class:
Today we began with a warm up on our Gatsby vocabulary 2 list using gif images to represent each word. Then, students were given time to complete their chapter 3 posters and present them to the class. At Home: Please read/annotate chapter 4 and study for your vocabulary 2 quiz!
In class:
Today in class we began class by reviewing the Anticipation Guide for The Great Gatsby, and then we jumped into an activity where students analyzed passages from chapter 1 to identify and analyze evidence of characterization, setting, and narration through close reading. We finished up by discussing our findings to analyze Fitzgerald's purpose as it applies to themes and plot development. At Home: Please read and analyze chapter 2 (POV/Diction, Symbolism/Colors, Allusion, Characterization, & Irony) and complete List 1 of your Gatsby Vocab
