In Class:
Today in class we spent time delving into the symbols of Gatsby, focusing, not only on the meaning behind various symbols of the text, but the purpose they serve in supporting the themes. We discussed the green light, Valley of the Ashes, West Egg /East Egg (East & West), The Eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleberg & Owl Eyes, New York, colors, characters as symbols, weather/time, and Gatsby's car. At Home: Please read/annotate chapter 9 and study for your vocab test! .In Class:
We began class by completing a warm-up on classifying sentences, specifically focusing on the question process to identify parts of speech in a sentence. Then, we reviewed various film interpretations of the Plaza Hotel scene to better understand the atmosphere and details of the characters as they are revealed in chapter 7. With our remaining time we discussed chapters 6 and 7, focusing primarily on the themes, plot development, and literary devices (foreshadowing, symbolism, characterization, narration, etc.) . At Home: Read/annotate chapter 8. Pay particular attention to irony as it supports thematic concepts of the text!
