Today in class we began class by reviewing the Anticipation Guide for The Great Gatsby, and then we jumped into an activity where students analyzed passages from chapter 1 to identify and analyze evidence of characterization, setting, and narration through close reading. We finished up by discussing our findings to analyze Fitzgerald's purpose as it applies to themes and plot development. At Home: Please read and analyze chapter 2 (POV/Diction, Symbolism/Colors, Allusion, Characterization, & Irony) and complete List 1 of your Gatsby Vocab
In Class: We began class with recapping our Catcher passage analysis sample and then students moved into a peer analysis of their chosen passages. Students contributed their insights to their partner's passage and then write a single statement of insight they gleaned from their partner's chart. We then transitioned into reviewing the Catcher Diagnostic essays and students took notes in their essays as we reviewed some essay fundamentals in an essay presentation (see below). Due to the abbreviated nature of our Friday classes, the lesson was concluded then.
