In class: We began class with lesson 5 in our sentence diagramming books and then wrapped up Bryant's "To a Waterfowl. After handing out the vocab list for this unit (hooray! No quizzes!) we went into some background information on American Gothic Literature and Edgar Allan Poe. From there, we discussed the use and forms of symbolism. Finally, students were given some class time to begin reading Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and compete a reading guide. At Home: Begin completing the first vocab list. Your list is not due until the first day of next week. We will pick up the rest of "Masque" next class period! In class: Today we began by completing lesson 3 and 4 in our Sentence Diagramming packets on compound subjects an verbs. From there, we recapped the Dead Poet Society video and where we saw elements of Classicism and Romanticism. Finally, students worked in pairs to paraphrase and discuss William Cullen Bryant's "To a Waterfowl" as an example of a Romantic poem. At Home: Finish any remaining questions not completed in class on your poem worksheet!
In Class: Today we continued working on our Gatsby Gossip Magazines after taking our final vocabulary quiz. Students turned in their vocabulary definitions packets and their symbolism worksheets. We also took some moments to discuss the finals day process and to go over the finals guide (see below). At Home: Please finish up your Gossip Magazine for our gallery walk and study for your Gatsby Final. Please see below for a general guide on your final.
In class:
Today we recapped the symbols of The Great Gatsby, specifically focusing on the influences of these symbols on character and themes Fitzgerald presents in his novel. Students were also give the chance to complete their own symbolism worksheets as we discussed the symbols. With the remaining time, we delved into chapters 7 and 8, specifically as we witness the climax and falling action of the text. At Home: Please complete chapter 9 and study for your Gatsby Vocabulary Quiz 2. In Class:
We began class by completing the Gatsby list 1 quiz, and then moved on to recapping chapters 5 and 6. The remaining time was used to begin reading chapter 7 of the text At Home: Please read chapter 7 up to page 130 (it's a long one!) and have your vocabulary for list 2 done if you'd like to receive an extra credit stamp. |
