In Class:
We began today with sentence diagramming lesson #12 on adverbs that modify other modifiers. From there, we recapped "On the Rainy River" where students were asked to group up with the other students that had the same rhetorical device and discuss their findings. They then shared some of their highlighted examples and we concluded the chapter with a discussion on O'Brien's perception of cowardice. Next, we dived into the chapter called "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong". Students were asked to pay close attention to the narrative as O'Brien recounts Rat Kiley's story, specifically methods of storytelling and reliability and how that affects our perceptions of O'Brien's overall narrative. At Home: Please finish "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" for next class. Also remember to work on vocabulary list 1 due first thing next week. Both SOAPSTones (for those that were assigned them) for "On the Rainy River" and "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" will also be due first thing next week.
In Class: We started class with a final activity on Romanticism vocabulary, and then moved into an introduction on The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Students were broken up into small groups to jigsaw different media regarding the Vietnam War, including movie clips, songs, an article, and a documentary. Students were then asked to give a brief response on what they saw and felt, including asking questions about the media. Then, they rotated to do the same process through each station. Finally, the class regrouped and discussed what they learned, their reactions, and to field and questions before our reading. At Home: None
