After various requests and feedback, I have moved this semester's correspondence and materials to Google Classroom.
Please refer to the above link to access the unit presentations, materials, and announcements. In Class:
We began class by going around the class and sharing a single word from the final vocabulary list before they submitted them. Students then began finishing up the reading and worksheet on the selected passages of Transcendentalism. Students had a chance to present and discuss their readings, key passages, and the connections to Grapes of Wrath. Finally, students were presented the Grapes of Wrath Socratic Seminar Assignment. At Home: Review your GoW annotations and notes for key passages, quotes, etc. to prepare for our Socratic Seminar. Please see the instruction sheet on the thematic ideas we will be discussing in our seminar! In Class:
Students began by wrapping up the poetry explication activity and sharing out insights and connections to the GoW passages. Then, students were given a crash course in Transcendentalism that led into selected readings from Emerson and Thoreau to compare to passages and themes of GoW. At Home: Please read/annotate the final two chapters of GoW (ch 29-30). Also have your GoW independent vocabulary list 4 completed by next class period.
Below are the instructions for your assigned Exodus chapters:
Part one: Act out the chapter in no more than one minute! Characters, setting, plot/conflict should be clear. Your quick performance can blend language from the chapter and your own adaptation--should show meaningful aspects of the chapter! (or a one minute narrative) Part two: Most important quote (or two) of the chapter and why?! Part three: One level two question to pose to the class. Needs to be from a different part of the chapter than your quote. Part four: Level three thinking: Find a comparative element much like we did today with the warm-up: Make one connection outside of the text: photograph, artwork, current event, famous person, news article, meaningful video--you need a visual of this--you can use the Smartboard. In Class:
We began class with a quiz on Grapes List 2 Vocabulary, and then we moved into a brief warm-up comparing The Avett Brothers song "Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise" to chapter 11 of GoW. We then discussed the value in making real world connections to texts and how they enrich our engagement and learning. Finally, students broke up into groups to complete an activity on the Exodus chapters (10-18) in which they presented one minute performances/ narratives, critical quotes, level 2 questions, and a level 3 connection to their chapter (music, movies, texts, art, articles, news, etc.) At Home: Please read/annotate chapters 21-22 of GoW. Also, please begin working on your Got Vocabulary List 3 definitions. Essay revisions are due by Sunday night at 10:00 PM! See below for your Gatsby Google Doc Link Submission form! In Class:
We began class with a warm-up on diagramming direct objects. We reviewed (and checked) Grapes vocabulary list 2 and then we moved into a reading check on the assigned readings from over the break. For the remaining time in class, we reviewed chapters 13-18 and fielded any questions. At Home: Please read/annotate chapters 19 and 20. Study for your vocabulary list 2 quiz and remember to be revising your essays for submission by the end of the weekend. In Class:
Students were given the first 20 minutes of class to wrap up their Roosevelt Inaugural Speech Analysis, after which we moved into a time to discuss general comments and issues on The Great Gatsby Essay. Students were able to view their essay comments on Turnitin.com and begin revising their essays on Google or start the assigned reading for Grapes. At Home: Please read/annotate chapters 13-18 over the break. Grapes Vocabulary list 2 definitions will also be due on Tuesday, but essay revisions will note be due until Thursday 11/29 in class. Have a good break!
